windows 8

Hello friends,

It has been a long time since I posted an online review but here we meet again in our windows reviews series, this time I’ll take you in a tour around the new windows 8 and I’ll be sure to point out the new amazing features!

..and believe me when I say “it is a Whole new world to discover”

This windows version is the latest release preview Build 8400, and the Official Windows8 Release date is announced 26 October.

Let’s start by the laptop Spec. used for this review

Acer Aspire Gemstone 5920G
Core 2 due T7300  2Ghz , 4MB cache
Nvidia Geforce 8600GT 256 MB GDDR2
4 GB DDR2 Ram
1GB Intel Turbo Memory
Toshiba 5400 RPM 500GB HDD
Primary:  Optronics ** 8ms / 60Hz / 720p / 15.4 inch laptop LCD
Secondary: Samsung 4ms / 120hz / 1080p / 32 inch LED TV

Ok may I have your attention dear tourists?

Here we are passing by the 1st Landmark

We’ll start our tour with a BIG SHOT

..The Famous Metro Style!

Frankly, I was confused where everything is?!! ..I heard many times about the so Called Metro Style, saw it in some of Microsoft ads., every time I was like “ hmm .. some fancy Interface that will never be used on a pc “ I believed it was like an Optional Launcher – Android users will relate - but believe me working with it turned to be a total new experience and more it is FUN, I LOVE IT !!

Staring some seconds at the new - Technicolor – Interface, then I yelled “Wait a Second where is the desktop?? “

Check the previous Screen I believe you missed it “At least I Did” it is on the bottom left >> The one with the roses!! , yes it isn’t the default landing screen anymore!

Desktop

Now, we have to LAUNCH the Desktop!!

..Sounds a little weird but you’ve to accept it on the way of “C’est la vie, Monsieur”, Clicking it will open the normal desktop that we all know

Ohh my saving island :D .. now i can go through steady steps!

..seems like we are getting old folks ^^ !

Ok now, the next question is “where is the start menu ??!”

..Starty Starty where are you ??

I moved the mouse to left bottom corner by INSTINCT

..and here it worth to mention that you’ve to believe your instinct it is the only thing that would make you know where it is ! ..There is no “Start” word, or even the Win7 glowing orb

NO sign at all that something exist here! [Check the previous Picture]

Here is a closeup shot after moving my mouse to the extreme left bottom corner

Clicking it the expecting the normal start menu with programs list that we all know, But ...Hey !! I’m back to the Metro Style!

Simply the Metro Style is the Start Menu Itself 0_0

neither an optional launcher nor a side way to launch programs that you can avoid, It is now the metro style or nothing!

...well, let's say it is a courageous step from Microsoft !

Ok, now gathering what I reached, here I’ve found my desktop and knew where the start menu is …At this point I got down to work and wanted to take snap shots for this review.

I whispered “Ok, Dear Start Menu where is the paint program ?!!”

And that got me to the next point

The Metro Style menu is indeed clean and specific

but OK WHERE ARE MY PROGRAMS ?!

“ ..you’re supposed to be a start menu aren’t you ? ”

Thinking for some seconds that Microsoft stripped them off :@ due to that companies suing them about forcing users to use their programs by including them by default ...all that bad thoughts passed my mind for fast seconds and accidently I right clicked as a random action

hey ..A little thing showed at the bottom! With the label “All apps”

Horaaaaay!! here it is! :D

Ok ok I got it, Win8 isn’t so innocent as it seems, it have a lot of hidden features to discover.

All programs

When you click the “All apps” Icon it opens the full start menu

Looking at it, it gave me some pleasant feel,

.. I got through the experience of feeling lost & finally fully discovered the Shore of the new Land of Windows 8 I felt quite proud like if I was Kristopher Columbus! :D

Well enough of fancying (A) and let's get back to work

The second basic step for experiencing any windows version is to Open "My computer” where you find all your drives and contents
For this let's agree first that Microsoft is obviously driving us to a preset way to use windows since they started putting Quick launch to programs like "file explorer" in the taskbar and made it in Large icons.

I believe that “my computer” link will be totally removed in future so I recommend you to adapt to that quick launch icon to get to the file explorer from now

But till now, don’t worry you can Still Find “Computer” link in “All Aps” list in Metro Style Menu or you can bring it to desktop by
>>Right Click on Desktop > Personalize > change Desktop Icons

File Explorer

The next Stage is the File explorer view of Win8 and here is a shot

what about the installation space ?! ..with a clean installation it took about 14.9 Gigabytes ..not far from windows

But it worth to be mentioned that Win8 rearrange drives to make itself on Drive: C In spite of the Fact of which drive it has been installed on.

While Rebooting to Win7 Everything is back to Normal and the letters labeling is as you see in the next shot

By a deeper look to the file explorer, surprisingly it received A LOT of improvements; not a usual step in all different windows upgrades ..anyway here I leave you with a shot after expanding the top toolbar

Here is a close up to its different tabs, each one is clear enough so I think the shots will be enough for this part

Ok What Next?!
Let’s Check together how far my lap specifications fell behind since windows 7 …It’s a mission for the Windows rating experience!,

Moving my cursor around the screen like I was searching for a hidden treasure called the “control panel” to popup! All in a sudden when reaching the bottom right corner a new feature appeared that we haven't discussed yet!

A new side bar shows up confidently on the right
Accompanied with a big fast information dialogue on the left containing [time, date, Network and Battery]
"leaving an android tablet feeling again"

Ok ...Hands down we have to give it a quick pass before we go to the expected routine experience of windows rating, shouldn't we?

New Sidebar

1) Search Icon
...Waiting for the typical boring screen of windows search, and ended up saying “WOW” seeing the following Full loaded search panel !

A powerful full featured search engine showed up with taps on the right menu to personalize your search in specific criteria

2) Share icon

...Yelling at me there is nothing to share

3) Start menu icon

.. brings up the Metro Style Menu which already was the First guest introduced in this party! [ No Need for a screen shot here ;) ]

4) Devices:

For the available option, “Second Screen”
[Which appears because I previously connected my lap to an external HDTV before going in this section]

Clicking it will open the following options >>

Notice that Microsoft Brings everything even from deep setting to the touch of your finger when you need them, They decided to make Win 8 Full Touch compatible and they succedded, Much more information regarding this particular concept will be illustrated in another dedicated review soon.

For now just akcnowledge that almost every program have a substituting touch friendly interface beside the original one.

5) Settings icon and this time it opens very useful options, Microsoft give you a full control all over your computer gathered in one place through this tab

Do you find the Power Icon ?! ..It seems that Microsoft finally knew that there was something wrong to open START to SHUTDOWN :D

Windows Experience Rating

Back again to our original way we are now heading the Windows experience rating, Running the Assessment ...And waiting for the big fall mainly because of false & generic drivers installed by windows

Well, it seems that Microsoft did a good job equipping their new windows with the basic required drivers ...ok I’m saying “Basic” because I went to device manager to check the rest and there wasn’t a pleasant surprise.

Ok Microsoft equipped all the essential drivers and to be fair the latest full functioning ones, the above uninstalled ones are secondary extending peripherals like the remote control infrared port, built in memory reader and the Intel turbo memory controller

File Transfer

Another nice improvement is the file transfer window it shows a histogram transfer speed as you see in the following pictures

And the new Pause Feature!

Here is the “fewer details” one

As well as Bonding different windows together in one if there is more than one transfer process

Clock is ticking,

It is nearly the time to go, so I’ll tell you about the last feature in this review which is called “hybrid boot and shutdown”

We all know the hibernation feature, aren’t we ?!

For those who never used it, it is a feature that copies all your RAM contents, kernel sessions and devices drivers to one file When you choose it to close your computer instead of Full shutdown. The next Time you open your pc it return them back to the ram directly and you are up with different windows and applications opened and everything just as before you turned off your computer.

Now, The Hybrid boot and shutdown is more of a partial hibernation, it only saves the kernel sessions and devices drivers to the hiberfile.sys instead of the whole thing, which results in a very small file compared to the full hibernation one.

A Brilliant Feature Indeed!. This cuts off up to 50% of your boot & even your shut down times as it is just a copying process, Given that it activates only when you press shutdown not restart

You can disable it by “although don’t know why you should”
>> Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do “From the left pane” > Change settings that are currently unavailable > remove the tick from Fast Shutdown

Last Words,

Far before windows 8, Microsoft showed up some intention to move from the high-tech rough experience presented by the windows OS till windows 2000 by a total recall under the name of winXP and it ended up with the pretty windows 7,

Windows 7 was a certain winner by making everything simple, limiting the needed resources for running windows os (compared to winVista)

After the release of Windows 7 for computers, it was a little while till Windows phone 7 showed up. Honestly, I was a loyal windows mobile user till windows mobile 6.5 pro, but since the new GUI of windows phone 7 I moved to android,

“if it isn’t the professional os feel of Microsoft mobile anymore then sorry Microsoft for fancying I will move to Android “

A mature opensource mobile software that is developed by GOOGLE with no questions about its innovation added to the welcoming inviting environment to all the developers of APPS will be surly the way to go for me.

Now after Windows 8 showed up,
Microsoft is tweaking the rules of the os battles
Specially with the Windows 8 RT release for ARM based Devices

In other words “Windows has gone the extra mile by united devices os experience to fight as ONE in the face of other os monsters that seems to have pulled the ground a quite more in the last couple of years”

Wither you are having your desktop, laptop, slate, tablet or even your mobile. Microsoft claims you will have the same exact experience.

Eager to see how they will make Windows Phone 8 to join the team.

Just a little Advice, although Windows 8 will be the same os experience on Intel & AMD based platforms as well as the ARM based devices, There will be a quite struggle for application and your different programs I believe won’t work the same [or even may not work at all] because there is a whole big difference between the two architectures. So when you bring your wallet to buy let’s say a tablet Check wither it is
Windows 8 “Intel based”
Windows 8 RT “ARM based”

RT suffix is the difference you can easily point out to know the difference without even knowing the hardware spec.

It is time to say Goodbye,

Thanks for your time reading this review,

After our interesting tour which was giving fast highlights to the Windows 8 new features and os experience, we have to say goodbye to all of you and shut down the computer with a promise of a next review I’m working on now about the modified Microsoft programs – Specially the touch friendly interface provided to most of them - as well as compatibility issues. It was nice time with you all, and looking forward for you to join us on our next trip ;)

Windows Seven Review- by MM

Hello… here we meet again,
After our last meet in vista Review
I was eager waiting to see.. how the next operating system from Microsoft will look like
… now I have been using windows Seven for a good while and starting with the
Windows Seven Features Review.. then coming soon the Program compatibility issues as I did in the vista ones ;)
So… starting by the Machine Spec I tested that Seven on “my laptop “
Acer Aspire Gemstone 5920G
Core 2 due T7300 , 4MB cache
Nvidia Geforce 8600GT 256 MB GDDR2
2 GB DDR2 Ram
1GB Intel Turbo Memory
8ms response 15.4 wide screen LCD

Well for truth I am somewhat surprised with Windows Seven
I feel it is a much updated vista… when u see it is just the same Vista u used to
But working a while u will find many handy features added
.. I didn’t feel familiar with that much easy everything goes.. I feel I am not using a Computer … and I didn’t like that ;) LOL

Let’s start reviewing that .. easy windows ;)

Installation went pretty good.. I think Microsoft knew its right way in windows setups since vista making them nearly fully automated

Starting with the first impression after installation.. very nice choice Microsoft… u did well choosing that blue theme.. it leaves a kind of relaxation after seeing it
And more the booting is very fast

Hey didn’t u like the blue one.. !! they are ready too.. Seven comes packed with 5 sweet themes fitting all users

Here some quick picks for you

That relaxing blue theme we already knew here

Pink Style.. getting those romance minds out ;)

Yellow theme for that color lovers..

Hey come one are u using these programs that auto changes your Desktop background periodically.. Seven comes to send them off stage with its built in slide shows backgrounds

Taskbar

Did u see that ? this is the taskbar.. from the main points in advertising “Seven”
It is from the series of redefining windows from Microsoft team.. like the change in may concepts from 2000 to XP to Vista here Seven made the taskbar more soft and handy

Starting with changing windows titles to only symbols and going with not that buttons says “ grouped “ when u have many windows in the same programs it groups it automatically even if two and shows their live thumbnails by clicking it program icon
And also passing from an icon to another on the taskbar the thumbnail changes by a sliding sweet effect

And ending with that innocent rectangle at the right end of the taskbar
Hmm it seems useless but just point your mouse to it and see what happens
the following are 2 shots for that.. simplifies in 2 sentences “ now u see… now u don’t “ ;)

Now you see

Now u don’t….
That little rectangles gets all that windows disappearing in seconds.. that transparency will help u in many ways if u want to give the desktop a quick look for some files and so

The coming feature here is auto Maximizing
Move a window with your mouse to the top of the screen and u see that windows runs maximizing on your screen

A shot while it is growing
Very fast eye catching effect

A shot after it fitted itself to your screen

want more.. ?? then move your window to other sides

Just move that window to the right it will fit itself to the right half only of the screen

Good step they returned the button to be default shutdown not sleep as in vista

A silly bug "btw didn't show on other PC tested on".. that windows didn’t detect all the partitions automatically
After installation I opened my computer to find only one drive “the seven installation one “
present.. Luckily I fixed that from computer management settings
Here how it goes if u faced the same problem:
right click my computer icon > manage > choose disk management in the left pane> right click your hidden partitions > change drive letter >  choose a letter then it is done ;)

Usb drivers’ options option… “Added the backup part “

Control panel
Seems more organized with the left pane minimized :)

At last the scoring rating system

The first one is the seven rating and the second is Vista’s one
As u see there is slight difference between them… but for the HDD part it takes us back again to the strange acts of seven with that part.. not detecting drives… and 2.0 ! rating beside 4.8 in vista… I think that was out of not a correct driver that “Seven” installed for the HDD

:D ok now I have took u in a fast tour inspecting Seven and watching its new wonders
And here preparing the next interview about programs issues with vista
Just a quick hint even Seven default programs “paint.. IE.. Etc “  have been greatly improved packing new features …
that next interview will be up very soon ;) keep an eye on it
By the way did you wondered where that Seven name came from
That was a point from Microsoft.. they said they didn’t like that names like Vista and so Neither they can name it by year like 98.. 2000 .. etc
Because they don’t release windows yearly and so it has no point to name it by year
So they decided to make it by version and that release considered as the 7th windows release

At last thanks for your valuable time reading this review.. hope I have delivered some new information and made u feel some of the Seven new world

application test on vista :)

Oct 12, 2006 3:53 PM by Discussion: Windows Vista
Well and Now here is Vista Review Part 2 -the compatibility issues
here i will write about the most common used programs and if there is errors in
installation , use ,.... etc

i have tried many programs and their different versions to try making a full
resource for you about compatibility issues so it took me a while after my
Vista New Features Review

First to Start with is the security programs to clear some points in that wide discussion
i have tested many programs of different Companies

1- Symantec Products as you see in the screen shot Vista refuses even starting installation
for any Symantec internet security and included products dated from 2003 to 2006

- and so i tried Symantec NIS 2007 .. now NIS was the one to refuse installation!!!

2- & for McAfee2006 Vista Refuses to install this version

- But in this screenshot Vista accepted the last version of McAfee security suite 2007

3- & "Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 14" went with no problems all

4- and if we take a look about ad wares protection programs I have tried one program in that
field (well maybe i didn't try another program as I see adaware is doing all the job perfectly)
i simply didn't find any errors in SE version 1.05 & 1.06 installations

Let us enter another important field specially for the designers and skinners : the Graphics Programs
We Will talk about:
Adobe Photoshop CS2 , Paint Shop pro , ACD 8 Pro , WindowBlinds 5 & Skin studio

1- here i started with Adobe Photoshop everything was working perfectly here until i came to the update part
as u see from this screenshot there is an error in the PS update but for truth there isn't any other errors
except that update

2- in this screenshot here is my test for the Paint Shop pro well after setup version XI i launched the program
it said that this version is expired !!! and so after a little thinking i tried to right click
the program and choose run as admin (although i am really logged on using admin account )
and... it is done everything went right after that

3- and ACD while running installation and every time you will run ACD Vista will give warning about compatibility issues
but.... i have been testing it for a reasonable while and nothing happened every thing is working smoothly without any
errors

4- and the well Known WindowBlinds 5 Vista will give warning about compatibility issues i tried to pass this warning
and continue installation but this time this didn't work at all
by the way skinstudio worked if you still wants to make skins for XP using Vista

and also we will Not forget the Internet related Products here
of course Vista comes with the great IE7 and i will not talk about it here (of course there isn't any compatibility issues here
but also if u still want to read about IE7 you can read my Vista Review you will find it here in the same site
and many other sites that is discussing Vista you will find it under the name of "Vista Review BY MM" )
and now but to the other products

Messengers:

1- well first to start with and the most strange is Microsoft Windows Live messenger yes it didn't work (at least in my test)
when you try to sign in it gives an error message as u see in the screen shot

- but when I run the troubleshooter it didn't find anything interfering with its connection !!!!

2- Google talk working perfectly

Browsers:

1- here is opera 9 without any problems

2- and the new growing FireFox without any problems too

well and as i thought for zipping programs there isn't any errors i have tried Winzip and Winrare and i think they don't
need screenshots we all know them well

a small tip: if you tried a program in Vista and it didn't work don't give up that ey
but take an extra moment trying to pass compatibility warning if there is any and
try also right clicking the lunch file (exe) and choose run as admin
that what i did with ACD & Paint Shop Pro
did i hear you saying that this will be a silly thing to do every time!!
well vista is doing such things due to a new feature that is called "user account control"
Microsoft thought this will be safer that vista will always ask your permission to do tasks
but you can easily turn this off from the user accounts in the control panel

and if you want to know more about Vista features you can read my review under the name "Vista Review By MM" you will find it
here too

at last thanks for your Valuable time reading my compatibility Review hope you enjoyed it and also wish i have answered many
of your questions

a simple review :)

Oct 6, 2006 3:20 PM by Discussion: Windows Vista
well i started with Pre RC1 but now
using Vista RC1 Build 5600
i am really enjoying it
i think Microsoft made a master Piece with that OS

My Computer Specifications:
Intel Pentium 4 2 GHz

Vista is a real Powerful OS from Microsoft

i got it installed in about 45 minutes
i didn't face any problems except when it just finished installation and restarted to logon for the first time on vista it said it will measure my pc performance and freezed at this screen anyway i restarted it and every thing gone perfect

and here is my small review on Vista i will write some simple comments about the screenshots
that i have taken to the most inmportant "New look" places in Vista

1-Let us start with the redesigned "Start Menu"
as u see from the pictures there is no more submenu after another every thing is opened
in one place in the start menu itself
and on the top right of Start menu there is a small picture that changes depending on
what are the pointer on now

2-Then the new powerful sidebare wich u see on this screenshot vista comes with some really great Gadgets
about weather, currency , analogue Clock , headlines and even a puzzle for you to enjoy

3-oh and i have forgotten the welcome Center Screen that have links for many useful tasks

4-and finally we see the long waited IE7 i think microsoft is trying to get all their past
IE users back again the first thing that u can notice when u connect to the internet is
the imprvoved net speed in IE 7 the webpages loads faster than ever
i am currently mainly depending on IE 7 on any internet related task
of course they have added also the tabs which allows you to open many sites in the same window

5- and here is the improved security Center containing windows defender

6- well and now let us talk a little about Windows Aero theme well microsoft is giving you
all your needs with the vista release a great skin with great abilities and gadgets
and big 3D icons like desktop X so why yill u need any other customising program ?
i think Skinners will have a lot to do now to compete with that great skin

7-Microsoft is paying attention for every error report u send now as u see here they found a solution for an error
i sent about a simple hang for the windows explorer!!!! hope they continue
after releasing the official version paying attention to that error reports

8-is any one getting a good help form the windows help center here?????
here in vista u will find it very useful even for some taskes it shows u step by step how
to make what u want it can do every thing in real and u can keep just watching and learting
or it can tell u press here and then here and u do so by yourself

9-this screenshot shows the animation while minimizing and maxmizing windows

10-and what about the alt-tab function it is still there but they have added
an icon near the quick launch icons on the task bar which will make a 3D preview for
the opened windows with a live shot from them and so u can shoose wich one u want to make the idea clearer take
a look on the screenshot

11-In Vista it will rate your computer to see how much powerful is it
it measures your processor,ram , harddisk,....etc
performance and give u a rate for every thing
and at then get the smallest rate that a component gave
and make it a so called "base score"
this rating will help in some parts in vista
this operating system is intellengent it measure
your computer performance and give u what your pc
will work with
for example the windows theme itself
if u have a powerful pc it will load the new windows
powerful Aero theme featuring transparancy, great animation, etc...

even in Vista included game it requires a min rating of "1" to work smoothly but i think in the part of games it isn't so important for a powerful computer
what solitar, minessweeper ,..etc will need to work????

that is a simple ways vista needs rating in

12-here is a shot for the control panel

13-and another one for the greatly improved folder icons "thumbnails"

14-take a look here do u recognize the old my computer ? here is the new one i think
every new feature is clear here in this screen shot
well did anybody here missed the old bar here? it is completely changed
u will depend on the keyboard shortcuts ctrl+X, ctrl+c ,..etc
but many is used to the up bottun and they can't easily forget there times clicking it
well here u can take a look at the address bar well u can go up now by just click the
part u need from the address bar itself u will get used to it and u will find it more faster

and now finally i hope i have given u a good review on vista and cleared some of
its great functions too
i have been reading its news for about two years now since it was called longhorn
well i am really really waiting for it

hope you have enjoyed your time reading this small review
